How Do You Like To Read?

I'm really curious how people will answer this one. It's open to all. Which do you prefer, braille, audio or scanned material when reading? (by scanned, I mean that you read it with a screenreader). I used to love audio books and will still grab one if it's available, but lately, I find myself shifting over to things read by my screenreaders. However, I've never been into braille. I've read a few books that way, but it's hard to really keep my interest, and even if the book does, I get tired. I've been reading braille since I was six-years-old too, so it's not like it's a new thing for me. I just prefer listening to books. Now here's another one related to all of this. Do you distinguish between reading a book in braille and listening to it? I've heard the argument that when I listen, I'm not really reading. I disagree. So what do all of you think?

I like listening to audio books. I used to read Braille books, but not really anymore. Using jaws to read is ok too.

I like reading in braill, (books or notetaker), but with that being almost impossible in college. Now I use a screen reader. This way I can go back and repeat whatever I ant and have it spell a word I'm not sure of.

I like to listen toaudio books and read braille books. I haven't heard of the the argument about the difference between audio books and reading braille books. But I do agree that reading braille books you get tired, afte a cuple of pages I fall asleep to and also you need to consentrate more on reading the braille rather getting to know the story.

Yeah, it's weird. I could listen to audio for ages. But if I read braille, I'll get tired and my eyes will start hurting.

for me there's no distinction between audo and braille reading. reading is reading. much prefer audio though, as i'm a bit of a slow braille reader. read braille since i was six too, but much prefer audio. will do screenreader books if i have to.

I read almost exclusively screen reader text.

Every now and again, a good audio reader will catch my fancy. But for the most part I like screen reader because you can search for text, spell words, or skim past a boring section.

I, too, am a pretty good Braille reader, and use that method if I need to pay close attention to formatting or tabular material.

But, it's jaws-in-my-ears for me.

I get just as much information out of a braille book, as I would with an auido book, or scanned material. I don't mind reading Braille. Hell, I read all seven chronicles of Narnia during my sophomore year of high school in braille, and now have the audio version of these books. audio books really depend on the narrator. Yes, I think one is reading if they are listening to a book on cassette or compact disc. I am sure I'll adjust to scanning material when school starts.

It depends on how long the book is. I like braille books some of the time and audio books other times.

well, I prefer audio books, the expression and all that, and i like just sitting back and listening. I will read screen read text if it's siomething i like to read, but know it's not available in audio from nls. I still read braille sometimes, mostly just to keep in practice with it, but istopped ordering braille books a long time ago from the library for the blind, because barille is so cumbersome, but yeah, I much prefer audio books, but screen reader read is ok if you can't find something in audio and it's better than . I don't care to scan them in with kurzweil anymore, because sometimes it will read a page perfectly, then the next 2 pages are so distorted, it'sunreadable.

I prefer to read in braille whenever I can. I will listen to audio if I really have to or jaws reading some thing out if I have to, but if I'm going to get any useful information out of something, I need to be able to read it myself.

I have to say that i don't read much but to me daisy sounds very good because somebody can have text, audio or both and somebody can move easily to any section of the book or even do a search for a particular phrase.
Also with daisy somebody can set bookmarks etc.

I prefer audio books honestly. Because I am lazy for it and I like to read layed on my bed. Of course I read braille but it's more tiring. Normally I have a audiobook for having a great fun and than use a braille magazine for making me fall a sleep. hahaha The problem is that when I read an audiobook, I get so excited for the story so I can read it for hours. I am not into read on computer: I don't like the voices and my braille display is not confortable for reading for a longtime. The same position makes me tired. so definitevely I would say audiobooks! (Smiles) But, for my work I am forced to use braille scores which is really diferent off course!

I got used to reading print not large prints just the normal font, so I got adjusted to it. I also use audio books, but I read print materials more often for school and for leisure.

I'm with Harmony, post 13. I love braille, but the selection is so limited, that I don't often find books I'd really want to read, so there's no choice but to do most reading with my BookPort or Jaws. I scan a *lot* of books, and will admit that I can read faster and so read more books on the computer, but there's nothing to compare to the sheer joy of reading a real braille book! I try to read one every 2-3 months. It is wonderful not to be tethered to earphones. Also, I absorb what I'm reading more easily if I'm actually seeing it in braille (none of your obvious jokes, please! LOL) so for school or work related reading, braille would be almost a necessity. I've been reading it since I was three!
